Amy Lee is the neo-goth styled lead singer of the band Evanescence, where she uses her classical music training in piano and voice to blend eras and techniques into a powerful fusion of musical elements.
One of five children of disc jocky John Lee and mother Sara Cargill, Lee was born in 1981 in California. When she was only three, Lee started her classical piano training, which continued for nine years. Although her family moved a lot, Lee was able to accomplish much with her music, and they eventually stayed in Little Rock, Arkansas. This proved to be an advantageous move-it was in Little Rock that Evanescence was born.
She and Ben Moody founded the original band, and within a month of beginning rehearsals together were playing at local coffee houses, bookstores, and other small venues. Together they recorded several demos and original CDs; however, Moody left in 2003, stating creative differences as his reason, and Lee founded a new Evanescence with the help of Terry Balsamo (formerly guitarist with Cold).
The band has seen its share of conflict. Manager Dennis Rider sued Lee in 2005, claiming his was released from his position without cause. However, Lee claims he was negligent and spent more time conducting his extra-marital affairs, as well as sexually harassing Lee herself and overcharging the band. There were other accusations as well. However, it has not stopped the band from making new recordings and continuing to carve a place for itself in the world of dark, classically-powered rock music.
Lee's fans not only lover her for her powerful music, but because she refuses to fall into the commercialism that many stars succumb to. She claims to emulate no one, and even makes her own clothes at times. It appears to pay off-Amy Lee is like no other musical star.
