Biography
Amanda Coetzer is a former professional tennis player, and was born October 22, 1971 in South Africa. She first entered the pro circuit in 1988, and made her name known when she won her first title in 1993 in Melbourne in top level singles. She also won a second singles title that same year in Tokyo. As her career progressed, she was noted for the habit she had of winning matches against players that were ranked higher than she was. She moved up in the rankings, and hit the top-20 for the women's world ranking in 1992. She stayed in the top 20 for most of her career, and made her way to her highest ranking of number 3 in 1997.

Her career, although without a host of grand slam titles, was successful, and in the 1996 Australian Open she became the first South African woman to come within reach of a Grand Slam title, when she lost to Anke Huber in the semi-final. Her best season was without a doubt that of 1997, when she moved up in ranking to the 3rd in the world. She again reached the semi-final of the Australian Open, even defeating the 1st ranked Graf. She beat Graf twice more to become one of the only players to defeat her three times in one year. Although Coetzer lost in the semi-finals of the French Open, she went on to win two singles titles later on that year in Hungary and Luxembourg. She won the highest ranked title of her career at Hilton Head in 1998, and she was joined by Wayne Ferreira in 2000 to win the Hopman Cup.

Her titles include nine for singles and nine for doubles, all at top-level. After her retirement from the professional tour in 2004, she left the professional tennis world. Her career earnings for prize money are estimated at around 5.5 million USD.
