Biography
Ali MacGraw, the daughter of artists, wanted to become an artist instead became a model, actor, editor, and a photographer. She was been nominated for an Oscar, and won a Golden Globe Winner for her portrayal of a doomed collegiate student in the saccharine sweet but very popular 'Love Story' (1970).

Born Alice MacGraw on 1 April 1938, in Pound Ridge, Westchester, NY, Ali was born to a 'violent' Irish American father and a Jewish mother and has one sibling. By the age of 22, she had entered the world of fashion as an assistant editor at the Harper's Bazaar magazine. She also worked as an assistant to the legendary fashion virtuoso, Diana Vreeland, at Vogue, until one day someone decided that her dark-haired, sombre looks were not just dazzling but singular enough to be project in front f the camera rather than behind the camera! Pretty soon, she was sizzling on the covers of internationally popular glossies and appearing on the tube in commercials such as Polaroid Swinger (mid 60s). Casting agents also come calling, though her movie debut in 1968, was nothing much to write home about.

In 1969, her fortunes took turn for the better and she achieved complete stardom with Goodbye Columbus. Smitten by Ali's prowess as an actor (or perhaps her looks), Paramount's Robert Evans promptly fell in love with her and became the master of the destiny of her career and later her life (they were married in 1971, this was Ali's second marriage). Next, she gave a career highlighting and smashing performance as Jenny Cavilleri, in the blockbuster Love Story. Evans' benevolence continued despite the fact that Ali left him for Steve McQueen, whom she met and fell in love with on the sets of Sam Peckinpah's The Getaway (1973), and to whom she was married from 1973 to 1978.

In 1974, Ali took a four-year sabbatical from the movies, after having lost the role of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (1974). Back after the hiatus, Ali's comeback was Sam Peckinpah's (yes a reunion of sorts) Convoy. The film didn't do anything at the box office and soon after Ali played the lady friend to Alan King in Just Tell Me What You Want. This film also marked Ali's retirement from the big screen and she confined her appearances to the tube.

She was seen in a bit but regular role in Dynasty, and acted in the miniseries The Winds of War (1983), and China Rose (1985). She has also acted in TV movies including Gunsmoke: The Long Ride (1992), and Natural Causes (1994).

Ali MacGraw has one son, Josh Evans (also an actor) from her brief marriage with Robert Evans. She was also married to Steve McQueen from 1973 - 1978.

In 1991, Ali wrote a well-accepted autobiography, Moving Pictures (which she now claims wasn't really well written!). The book describes her fight against alcoholism, and male dependence. Perhaps because of her inner strength, People magazine chose her as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.

In 2006, Ali MacGraw made her Broadway debut in New York, in the drama Festen (The Celebration) in the role of a dysfunctional matriarch.
