Biography
Alfred Molina, the dark and lanky Englishman is one of Britain's most versatile actors whose acting capabilities have been grossly underappreciated. Born in London on 24 May 1953, Molina has completed his education from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. Molina was most recently in the news having starred in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway where he played the legendary role of Tevye and received a Tony Nomination for his acting.
Molina is an accomplished actor who has over fifty films, television, and theater productions to his credit. He received rave reviews for his role in the super successful sequel Spiderman II where he played the role of Dr. Ock. In addition to this, he appeared in the Jim Jarmusch film Coffee and Cigarettes and the Miramax production Undertaking Betty, with Naomi Watts, Brenda Blethyn, and Christopher Walken.
Molina has featured in diverse films and has played roles complementing every conceivable genre. This is a testament to his great adaptability and willingness to experiment. Molina is the son of a Spanish waiter and an Italian housekeeper, and he began his career as a part of a street-corner comedy team. It was not too long before he earned professional credibility as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His first memorable film appearance was in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), where he played the devious South American guide who leaves Harrison Ford for dead in an ancient temple but finally meets his own end in a nasty booby trap.
His second film was Stephen Frears' Prick up Your Ears (1987), which is based upon the life of playwright Joe Orton. The film has Alfred Molina cast as Kenneth Halliwell, Orton's lover and murderer. He was almost unrecognizable in the movie as a bald, severely unhinged Halliwell. He once again rose to greater heights as an actor and earned a number of positive reviews for his performance. He gave a noteworthy and similar disturbing performance in Not Without My Daughter (1990), where he played the tyrannical Iranian husband of an American woman.
Alfred Molina experimented with a different style of acting and came out with sympathetic portrayals in films like Mike Newell's Enchanted April (1992), Species (1995), and The Perez Family (1995). He was featured as a Cuban immigrant struggling to make a new life in Miami in the Perez family. In truth some of his outstanding works can be defined through his portrayal of a man on the edge of insanity. Alfred Molina's role as a deranged playboy in Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights (1997) is a film that says it all. His capacity to bring out the very best or worst in a character was evident through the movie Dudley Do-Right in 1999, where he was the resident villain. The same year he worked with Anderson in the director's ensemble-driven Magnolia.
In the next few years, Molina was seen more on the television but also played some memorable roles in films like Chocolat (2000) and Frida (2002). Frida got him the Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for his portrayal of a chronically unfaithful painter Diego Rivera. But his biggest box office hit until date is the role of the infamous Dr. Oc in the critically-acclaimed Spider-Man 2.
