Biography
A man with sharp objects that is clumsy...is terrifying. A man with sharp objects that is agile, strong, and sexy...is irresistible. Alexei Yagudin is not only the world's best male ice skater, but he is also an incredible teacher of the sport. It is difficult to decide whether we'd rather see him producing more skaters as fine and flawless as himself, or strutting his stuff in his tight little leotard out on the ice himself.

Born Alexei Konstantinovich Yagudin on 18 March 1980, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Alexei knew from the age of four that he wanted to be a world-class skater, no matter what the odds were at the time of a Russian man rising to the top of the sport.

Alexei's entire skating career was filled with triumph after triumph, starting with the 1996 Junior World Championships in which he secured and easy first place. He won a bronze medal at his first World Championship and later went on to secure first place every year from 1998 to 2000 and again in 2002, becoming the only Russian man to ever win a World Championship in figure skating.

Alexei continued his winning streak with the 1998, 1999 and 2002 European Championships.

In the years following, Alexei continued to set records, winning the 2002 gold medal at the Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah and becoming the first skater in history to win first place at the Grand Prix final, European Championships, World Championships and Olympics all in one season. At the same Olympics, Alexei became the first male skater in fifty years to earn first place votes from all of the judges. He is the only male skater to receive perfect scores from all of the judges on all of the categories (no other has ever even received more than one perfect mark in each category). Later that same year at the World Championships in Japan, he became the first skater ever to receive perfect scores from all of the judges on presentation and the required elements.

During his eligible skating career, Alexei lost only one World Championship due to pain medication injections for an injury that forced him to skate without feeling in his right foot. Despite his inability to correctly and agilely land every jump, Alexei, the master of ice and its associated flight, still skated well enough to secure second place, a feat that is sure to stay in record books unbroken for all of time.

Despite all of his training and natural ability, Alexei retired from eligible skating in 2003, mostly to repair an injury caused by a congenital disorder that forces his hip bone and socket to grind against one another without the protection of muscle. Because of this disorder and the pain that comes with it, Alexei is unable to perform the Lutz and Double Lutz, loops, quads and certain triples. Despite this inability to perform many of the acrobatics of skating, Alexei is still considered a favorite in professional skating and is still revered as on the most progressive and successful male skaters in history, taking on new pupils all the time, hopefully finding a new trainee that break some of his own records.
