Biography
The man behind Scarface and the star from The Scent Of A Woman has been the Godfather of the Hollywood movie industry. Unarguably the most talented actor Al Pacino was born as Alfredo James Pacino on 25 April 1940 in East Harlem. His parents divorced when he was just two years old and Al moved in with his mother and grandparents to Bronx. He had the movie bug from a very young age and would enact scenes movies he had seen with his mother.
He went through a tough and poverty stricken early life but his teachers noticed his acting capabilities and voted him most likely to succeed in Junior High owing to his acting capabilities. Al enrolled into the famous High School of Performing Arts in New York City but by the time he was 17, he dropped to pursue his acting career.
For almost 15 years, he struggled to make a living as a theater janitor and at the same time, he enrolled for classes in Lee Strasberg's Actor's Studio and the Hebert Berghof Studio, in New York City. When he was 22, he faced the toughest time of his life as his mother passed away and a year later his grandfather passed away too. Through the 60's Al tried everything from children's theater to Broadway and won an Obie for The Indian wants the Bronx in 1968. It was his intensity that caught the eye of many critics as well as directors and he got his first leading role in the movie, The Panic in Needle Park (1971). Soon after, Francis Ford Coppolla cast Al as Michael Corleone in the movie The Godfather.
The Godfather changed his life as Pacino gave a breakthrough performance and got nominated for Oscar awards. His next film, Serpico (1973) launched him into superstardom and were followed by The Godfather, Part II and Dog Day Afternoon. Al Pacino earned four Academy Award nominations all the four films for four consecutive years (1972-1975) and won fans throughout the world.
In 1977 with Bobby Deerfield, Pacino's career started spiraling downwards and cruising in 1980 was a total flop. In 1983, Al made a comeback with Scarface but the next film revolution (1985) bombed. For the next four years, Al went out of the movie world but came back in 1989 with sea of love, a cop thriller paired opposite Ellen Barkin. It was a huge success and Al was back in business again. Since then Al has never looked back and given some powerhouse performances in The Godfather, Part III (1990) Dick Tracy, and Frankie and Johnny. He won the first Oscar in 1992 for Scent of a Woman after seven previous nominations.
Pacino followed this up with some really successful and powerful movies like Carlito's Way (1993) and the critically acclaimed Heat (1995). In Heat, he came face to face with another powerhouse actor Robert De Niro. Some of the other successful movies after this included Donnie Brasco with Johnny Depp and Devil's Advocate (1997) with Keanu reeves and Charlize Theron, The Insider (1999) and Any Given Sunday (1999).
