Biography
He's defended a nation in times of trial and tribulation. He's served the people as a government official. He's made strides in changing the desperate situation to the environment. So why is he such a controversial figure? Maybe it's because he's got a boring voice or maybe it's because you have to blame the bad things on somebody. Al Gore was not only one of the most successful vice presidents in the history of the United States but he is also an empowered entrepreneur and environmental activist. It's hard to decide if we should remember him for the bad and boring or for the good that he's done.
Although Al Gore's initial dream was to be President (a dream which he has failed to achieve twice in his political career-yes twice, once in 1988 (he lost the Democratic bid to Michael Dukakis who lost to Bush Senior) and then again in 2000, when he lost to Bush Junior), his took his role as Vice President as well as his losses to the Presidency in stride, making changes for the better and opening the door for all of us to follow his lead.
Born Albert Arnold Gore, Jr. on 31 March 1948 Al Gore has been involved in politics and activism for most of life, beginning with decision to serve in the military during the Vietnam War despite his arguments against the cause. Five years after his return from overseas, Al became the first person to appear on the CSPAN Network while making a speech in the White House Chambers. One year later, in 1980, Al introduced the Gore Bill (kind of a gross name when you don't know who it's attached to), legislation pertaining to the expansion of the internet (in 1980 they had internet to some capacity) and it was later passed as the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991.
Al received his biggest break into politics in 1992, when Bill Clinton chose him to be his running mate as Vice President on the Presidential ticket. Al served with Bill for two terms in office, until 2001, when he lost the Presidential election and Republicans took over the White House.
Aside from being a political aficionado, Al is also a New York Times best-selling author, the only sitting Senator (the book was written in 1989) to make the list since JFK. Al's first novel, The Earth in Balance was only the first in a string of commentaries he would make on the condition of the planet. He started the GLOBE awareness program in 1994 to promote environmental awareness in children and starred in the Academy award-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" in 2006.
Al is currently finishing up his new book The Assault on Reason due out in May 2007 and works as the president of Current TV, chairman of Generation Investment Management, director on the board of Apple Inc. and is an unofficial advisor to Google's senior management, among other things.
Al is married to the love of his life, Tipper and they have what they call "a wonderful family and a perfect life" (even without the Presidency).
