Biography
Most men count themselves lucky if they can find a woman that isn't a finicky eater...but imagine what they have to go through with a woman who is finicky about her career! Ajda Pekkan may be a natural woman when it comes to being finicky, but her pickiness about her career landed her at the top of the charts and made her the biggest super star her country has ever seen. It's a difficult choice to make whether we love to see her acting more than we love to hear her crooning out those sweet, melodic tunes.
Although she may have started out on the top as an actress, it is clear that Ajda's heart lies in music and singing her way to the top rather than in pretending her way to the top, a desire that was made clear when, opposite from other actors, she transited into singing from acting instead of the other way around.
Born Ayse Ajda Pekkan on the 12 February 1946 in Istanbul, Turkey, Ajda knew from a very young age that she wanted nothing more than to be a performer. In 1962, she began singing at popular Turkish nightclubs and in 1963, she won Ses Magazine's Cover Star contest, launching her into her professional entertainment career.
Although Ajda had won a singing contest, she spent her days from 1963 to1967 playing in over 47 film roles, most of which were singer roles, but did not allow her the adrenaline rush of the stage performances that came with a singing starlet's life. In 1968, Ajda released her first album "Two Strangers" and the album, as well as Ajda, rocketed to the top of the charts and music sales. Over the next 10 years, Ajda performed all over the world, including Athens, Barcelona, Paris, Japan, France, and Germany. She released Superstar and Superstar 2 in 1977 and 1979, respectively.
Ajda's career took a downturn in the 1980s, with low scores at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 and two failed albums, Just Be Happy and I Loved You, which were both in the new trend of Turkish music. In 1983, Adja returned to pop music, concert success, and fame, including the releases of her albums Superstar '83 and Superstar '87.
Ajda first broke over a million sales with the release of her 1990 album Ajda 1990. Immediately following this huge success, Ajda released a throng of albums that are even more successful and in 1998 to her delight, she released the sales-topping album The Best of Ajda.
In 2006, Adja released her latest album (of more than twenty albums over the course of her fruitful career), Cool Woman, which included the chart topping, number one hit dance single Vitrin.
Ajda is currently working on her next album and playing shows throughout Turkey to sold out audiences over six-month periods.
So whether you next see her winning another award for best-selling album or chart-topping hit in European and world music awards, Ajda's music and the sheer volumes in which she pumps out the hits, has revolutionized the way we think about musicians, which is why she is known in Turkey not only as their most famous singer but also as "Superstar."
