Born in a traditional south Indian family on 1st November 1973 in Mangalore, Aishwarya grew up in Mumbai. A good student, she aspired to make a career in medicine. But, modelling happened quite by chance for her in the ninth grade. Soon, she was cast in a Pepsi commercial and the rest as they say is history. The commercial became a huge hit and Ash, was on her way to instant stardom. Then in 1994, she won the Miss World crown gaining international stardom. Since then, she has become one of the highest paid stars in Bollywood. Ash's captivating beauty and grace have taken her to dizzying heights of popularity as a model, actor, and a global representative for India in specific and Asia in general.

Ash's acting career started with critically acclaimed 'Iruvar' to be followed up with 'Aur Pyar Ho Gaya' also in 1997. Her role in the latter also won her a Best Female Debutante Award. In 1998, she acted in 'Jeans' which also won critics appreciation, though the film was a moderate success at the box office. In 1999, Ash was selected as the Brand Ambasador for Longines Watches in India. Her acting in the blockbuster hit 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' (1999) won her the Best Actress Award. In 2002, she acted in two more movies, 'Kandukondain Kandukondain' and 'Humara Dil Aapke Pass Hai'. Aishwarya won both public and critics applause for her portrayal as a rape victim in the latter.

However, it was the mega-opus 'Devdas' (2002), which proved to be a turning point in her acting career. The film was a huge hit and received a special screening at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. In fact, Devdas is the first Indian film to receive such an honour. The press went gaga over this beauty from India with flawless skin and brains to match. In 2003, Ash was invited to be part of the grand jury at the Cannes; an achievement as no other Indian actor had been invited to be part of the jury until then. The same year TIME Magazine's Asian Edition chose her as one of Asia's "100 Most Influential People."

With 'Bride and Prejudice', (2005), a crossover hit, Ash proved yet again that she was playing her role of bringing Indian culture and films into the global spotlight with aplomb. Having tasted success in Hollywood, Ash was now ready to take on some serious projects in America. 2007 will see her in the historical epic 'The Last Legion'. She will also act with Meryl Streep in 'Chaos'. Ash continues to balance both Hollywood and Bollywood with dexterity.
