Biography
One of the cult figures of new wave music, Adam Ant was born Stuart Leslie Goddard in Marylebone, London on November 3, 1954. His father was a chauffeur while his mother was a cleaner who had worked briefly for Paul McCartney. Adam never had the opportunity to actually meet Paul until many years later.
Adam had several distinct career phases where he explored the guitar oriented post punk with his group Adam and the ants as well as pop oriented music that finally got him on the top of the charts. Adam became a part of the punk rock movement as one of the art school of punk group that followed the original punk groups like Siouxsie Sioux, Billy Idol, and Chrissy Hynde. Some of the early sex pistol gigs had Ant as one of the many in the audience.
Adam joined a band called Bazooka Joe where he played bass and this is where he was able to see the Sex Pistols perform in their first ever-public concert. He was so much into punk that he acted in Derek Jarman's 1978 punk film Jubilee. He made his debut as a recording artist with the song Deutscher Girls, which was featured on the soundtrack LP. The song was also re-released as a single in 1981, and by then the Ants had achieved chart success as a band.
He gained an enthusiastic fan base after the release of the album Dirk Wears White Sox in 1979. Around the early 1980, Adam Ant got his old friend Marco Pirroni to make changes in the sound, image, and members of the band. The new look of the band was used to promote the album Kings of the Wild Frontier. As the band's popularity grew, they followed up with another album called Prince Charming, which was highly successful. This was also the time when he had a brief relationship with actor Jamie Lee Curtis. The group finally split in early 1982.
Post split, Adam went solo and his greatest chart success came in 1982 with the album Friend or Foe, which included the hit single Goody Two Shoes (UK#1 and US#12). The other hit single from the album was Desperate But Not Serious. In 1983, Adam worked with Phil Collins and Richard James Burgess and their single Puss 'N Boots reached #5 on the UK charts. Towards the end of the 80's Adam spent more time in acting especially on television. He appeared in American shows like The Equalizer and Sledgehammer.
In 1990, Adam went back to London and re-entered the pop music world with his album Manners and Physique. It was a moderate success featuring the hit single Room at the Top. In 1993, he went on a live tour to support his next album called Persuasion. In 1995, Adam released Wonderful with the title track getting him some success. During this period, Adam spent a lot of time taking tours of Virgin record shops. The band also performed live in Middlesbrough, Dublin, Stoke, and Glasgow. In the September of 2006, Adam launched his autobiography: Stand and Deliver, which sold every copy published.
