Throughout her career, actress Sandra Bullock has proven that she can effectively play any role that she decides to tackle. The Academy Award-winning actress has been making audiences laugh and cry for more than 20 years. Off screen, however, she is a generous, humble, and altogether fascinating person. Here are 12 fun facts that you may not have known about Sandra Bullock.

1. She is fluent in German


Bullock’s mother is an opera singer, so she spent much of her childhood living in Germany and other countries overseas. She became fluent in German while living there and continues to speak the language today.

2. The role of Lucy was written for another famous actress


The role of Lucy, which Bullock memorably played in “While You Were Sleeping”, was actually written for actress Demi Moore. Bullock, who had recently starred in the action flick “Speed”, was ready for a change of pace, so she gladly took on the romantic comedy when Moore backed out.

3. Her high school loved her


Always a positive person, Bullock’s high school class voted her “Most Likely to Brighten Up Your Day.”

4. She won an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year


Bullock is the only actor to ever win an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year. She took home the Razzie for “Worst Actress” in “All About Steve” about a week before winning the Academy Award for “Best Actress” in “The Blind Side”. Always a good sport, she attended the Razzie ceremony in addition to the Oscars.

5. She dated Matthew McConaughey


She had a brief fling with Matthew McConaughey in the ’90s, and this led to a more lasting relationship with the actor’s hometown of Austin, Texas. Bullock fell in love with the friendly people and slower pace of Austin, so she bought a house there and even opened up her own restaurant.

6. Her first role on stage was successful


Having spent her youth doing bit parts in her mother’s operas and singing in children’s choirs, Bullock was no stranger to performing in front of people. Her breakout role on the stage came when she starred in the Off-Broadway play “No Time Flat.” Screen director Alan J. Levi saw the show and offered Bullock a role in her first TV movie.

7. She dropped out of college with 3 credits left


She attended college at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, but left the school to pursue acting when she was just three credits shy of graduating.

8. She loves nontraditional medicine


Bullock is fascinated by nontraditional medicine. She has used acupuncture as a weight-loss tool, and she brought a herbalist to the set of “Murder By Numbers” to help keep the members of the cast relaxed.

9. She has donated millions of dollars to those in need


After the devastating earthquake hit Japan in 2011, she donated $1 million to the relief effort. She has also donated millions to the Red Cross in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

10. She was in a rehab clinic


Bullock was determined to accurately portray an alcoholic struggle with addiction in the film “28 Days”, so she spent time at an actual rehab clinic when doing research for the role.

11. She has been named “Entertained of the Year” twice


Versatile performances have led to Bullock being named Entertainment Weekly’s “Entertainer of the Year” twice. In 2009, she received the honor for the first time after her roles in “The Proposal” and “The Blind Side”, and then she repeated the feat in 2013 after starring in “The Heat” and “Gravity.”
